SNOWSHOEING

Telemark Cross-Country Ski Club also offers a selection of snowshoeing trails for all abilities. The facility offers a modern, spacious chalet with heated washrooms and snack bar. Trails are of varying length and difficulty, from gentle winding trails through forests to a climb up Panorama Ridge. Sweeping views make it worth the effort. Access to the trails is $5 for the day; rentals and guides are available.

Snowshoeing can also be done on crown land directly across the road from Telemark. Here there's a gentle loop trail, and a lengthier one up a gradual but long slope up the mountainside. Dogs are permitted on these trails whereas they are not at Telemark.

Crystal Mountain Resort in collaboration with Selah Outdoor Explorations offers a wonderful snowshoeing experience, the starlight snowshoe trek on top of Mount Last. Enjoy great views, cozy up to a bonfire and savour chocolate fondue in the snow. It's unforgettable and less than $50 pp. With 12 kms of trails, you have plenty of other options at Crystal Mountain, including guided tours.

Selah Outdoor Explorations exists to provide quality outdoor and environmental learning to young people and adults in the Okanagan Valley. The word "Selah" means Stop and Consider. We believe it is important for people to draw aside and stop to consider the natural world in order to understand and appreciate it. Our programs and tours are designed to foster this understanding and appreciation and to equip people with the knowledge and skills to continue to do this effectively on their own. We achieve this by exploring topics in outdoor skills, natural history and the cultural history of Canadians who lived close to the land.

19th CENTURY DINNER AND SNOWSHOE HIKE

Canada has always been known for its legendary cold winters and mountains of snow. For hundreds of years, the snowshoe was the most practical way to move about. In Quebec, military teams were formed and race events organized to encourage physical fitness and competition. In the 19th century, groups of urban gentlemen and ladies continued this legacy and in 1843, the Montreal Snowshoe Club was formed - the first of its kind. A typical outing consisted of a tramp (sometimes over a considerable distance,) a stop for a meal or snack at a favourite inn and a tramp home.

Snowshoe clubs began to appear elsewhere as the popularity of snowshoeing increased with tramps sometimes boasting upwards of 200 participants. Clubs often sported uniforms and had their own songs, marches and mascots. Come and catch a glimpse into Canada's snowshoeing heritage by reliving one of these snowshoe outings through our special period dinner and hike.

Cost: $60 + GST per person includes dinner and beverages, chairlift, snowshoe rental and guided hike.
