CYCLING THE OKANAGAN

Touring the Okanagan on two wheels is a popular way to get around and see the scenery. Pastoral scenery and roads that are often quiet make for a pleasant way to explore the valley.

On or off-road, you'll find great rides here. If you're on the road, stay safe. Stay in single file and keep to the right. Keep enough speed to keep control of your bicycle and pay attention. If you want to admire the scenery, please pull off. The writer of this page has seen cyclists suddenly veer several feet off their line of travel as they look out over a lake or look over their shoulder to check approaching traffic.

Some of your rides may be along old rail routes, since converted to fantastic cycling and hiking areas. You may very well see sizeable wildlife such as elk and mountain sheep. And get ready for the hills. If you are going to ride for any appreciable distance, you will get some exercise!

You can go your own way, or enjoy one of a number of wonderful guided tours. For visitors from elsewhere, keep in mind:
  • Bicycle helmets are mandatory in BC
  • Lights are required at night
  • Cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motor vehicle drivers
  • Obey posted signs and keep to designated trails
Just a couple of the numerous rides available:

Mission Creek Greenway
Mission Creek Greenway is a gravel-surfaced, multi-use trail that can be accessed from various points along Lakeshore Road in downtown Kelowna. This is an easy ride that you can enjoy for an hour or two. Starting in the city, you'll quickly find yourself in farmers' fields. Then you'll make your way through the forest to the spectacular Gallagher's Canyon.

The Desert Rocks: A Downhill Ride Along Vistas & Vines
A guided tour with Adventure Okanagan.

This South Okanagan bike tour bridges the desert rocks of Canada's semi-arid desert with the lush vineyards of irrigated hillsides, all framed in the backdrop of a crystal clear lake, and deep blue skies. Explore one of Canada's scenic wonders, the Kettle Valley Railway portion of the Trans-Canada Trail with their guide Ed Kruger. There's no uphill pedaling, it's downhill all the way via a gradual descent on a wide trail. You will discover stunning views of the lake, valley and vineyards to our tour destination on Okanagan Lake. After lunch and a wine tasting at Hillside Winery you will return to Kelowna or Penticton.

This 7.5 hour guided tour includes a 24 speed, suspension Bike Rental, Helmet, Lunch, Snacks, Transport from Kelowna, Water, and Wine Tasting. Optional Wine Pairing Dinner available at the Birch Grill in Kelowna.
