BALSAMROOT
Although often mistaken for a daisy, The Cove’s signature flower is actually the balsamroot. Okanagan’s hot and dry climate is ideal for the balsamroot. In the spring, the flower will blanket the sunny hillsides throughout the Okanagan. The balsamroot is a large perennial flower, growing up to 80 cms with 15 cm wide flowers. A popular staple for wildlife, the entire flower can be eaten. Native Americans traditionally used the flower for both sustenance and medicinal purposes. With a large yellow flower, the balsamroot can de easily identified. The bottom stem and silver-green leaves are felt-like. Believe it or not, the taproot of the flower has a pleasant balsam scent.
