SILVER STAR MOUNTAIN RESORT
Silver Star Provincial Recreation Area in the Shuswap Highlands is home to Silver Star Mountain Resort, the most northerly winter playground in the Okanagan Valley. Hotels, restaurants, a saloon, lounges, and a grocery store are all clustered at the base of the resort’s chairlifts. Everything is within easy walking (or skiing) distance.
The 84 designed trails are designated as 20 percent easy, 50 percent more difficult, 20 percent most difficult, and 10 percent extreme. In addition to the trails, there are 400 acres of open bowls and lightly forested glades. The mountain is serviced by two high-speed quad chairlifts, a quad and double chairlift, and two T-bars. Cross-country skiers receive just as much welcome here as do other winter enthusiasts. Beginning from the trailhead at the entrance to the resort, the 23 miles (37 km) of tracked and groomed trails fan out through the park. An additional 30 miles (50 km) of groomed trails lead through the adjacent Sovereign Lake area.
The hill receives 23 feet (700 cm) annually of the world’s best powder the famous Okanagan Champagne powder. And the comfortable daytime temperatures at an average of -5 C, (27F), are cold enough to keep the snow light and fluffy, but perfect for skiing.
The National Altitude Training Centre, a world-class sport and recreation facility, is the year-round training base for several ski, bike, and luge teams.
